More Patients Seek Plastic Surgery Advice From Social Networks

A recent survey by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) found that more patients sough out information about plastic and cosmetic surgery procedures from social network sites, rather than asking their friends and family for suggestions.

In 2011, 42% of patients received most of their information about plastic surgery from social media sites. This is a significant increase compared to 2010, in which only 29% of patients sought advice and information from social networks.

This marks a noteworthy increase in trust in social media communities. Plastic surgeons and cosmetic dermatologists should take this change to heart and begin interacting with patients in social networks if they are not currently doing so.

Social networks, like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, and resource communities, like MakeMeHeal and RealSelf, are great for both patients and doctors. The social networks provide doctors a great platform to reach and market to patients. Furthermore, resource communities allow patients and doctors to interact through message boards.
